The new Koelnmesse is taking shape
The architectural competition for the new buildings on the exhibition grounds was decided after about ten months on 21.03.2016. After a three-stage competition, the jury voted for the design by JSWD Architekten and selected the Cologne-based architectural office as the winner of the procedure.
At the penultimate meeting on 22 December 2015, the eleven-member jury, consisting of representatives of the City of Cologne, Koelnmesse GmbH and independent experts, selected two designs by JSWD Architekten and Düsseldorf-based ingenhoven architects for the final round, which were then further developed leading up to the decisive meeting in March 2016.
For the participating architectural offices, the task was to integrate complex usage requirements into the new buildings of Hall 1, Confex and Congress Centre East as well as to take into account facets of sustainable construction. After all, sustainable is the new standard at Koelnmesse. Buildings like Confex were planned in such a way that they were already awarded the highest category (platinum) by of the German Sustainable Building Council (DGNB).
