Events

Since its founding nearly 100 years ago, Koelnmesse has brought millions of people together from all over the world, paving the way for inspiration, innovation and cooperation – across national borders and cultures. For several years now, our customers - whether organisers, exhibitors or visitors - have increasingly prioritised sustainable trade fair participation. We work together to conserve resources and raise awareness of increased sustainability during our events. Our current focus is on stand construction, food service and general services.

Sustainable stand construction for long-term reuse

We already offer sustainable system stands that serve as an ideal foundation for sustainable trade fair stand construction because it is possible to reuse them long-term. Produced and stored in the immediate vicinity of Koelnmesse, the predefined stand constructions also guarantee short transport routes and a regional infrastructure - another building block for avoiding CO2 emissions.

In order to improve accessibility, sustainability and efficiency in the handling of trade fair traffic in Cologne, we have set up the largest digital traffic management system in the trade fair industry worldwide. Every year, tens of thousands of stand builders and exhibitors are guided directly to their destination on our trade fair grounds. Drivers and forwarding agents book their unloading time slots in advance and can optimise their delivery routes so that they reach their destination without detours. In this way, we help reduce traffic, fuel consumption and emissions in one of Europe's largest metropolitan areas. The video shows what's behind it all.

The measures are supported and funded by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport.

Vegan restaurant

Koelnmesse is the only trade fair company in Germany to date to offer a restaurant with a permanent 100% vegan menu. This is another building block towards our goal of significantly reducing the proportion of meat in our dishes. In order to consistently avoid waste, food and beverages have been served exclusively on porcelain tableware since April 2023.

100% deposit system by 2025

Following the successful switch to a deposit system for food and beverage containers in our in-house cafeteria, we are now aiming to increase the proportion of deposit bottles sold for drinks at our events to 100% by 2025. Together with our external partners, we want to make a significant contribution to environmental protection. By consistently using deposit systems, we are reducing the consumption of disposable packaging and promoting the circular economy.

Stress-free and environmentally friendly travel to the trade fair

The Cologne Messe/Deutz ICE train station as well as the public transportation stops right in front of the trade fair gates make it easy to travel by train. Koelnmesse is not only exceptionally well connected to local and long-distance transportation, but all admission tickets to our own events also include free use of local public transportation. On long journeys, a Deutsche Bahn Special provides an alternative to travelling by car or plane.

Paperless online ticketing

We work with a purely digital ticketing system for our own events and also offer it for our guest events.
